The drug company Bayer has been called down three different times for various problems with its oral contraceptive drug Yaz. The FDA has had problems with the drug itself, the affects it can have on women, and with the message of Bayer’s marketing campaign. The first of the FDA Yaz Blood Clots Warning letters stated that Yaz advertising made the drug seem superior to other similar drugs, when in fact it posed greater risks to consumers. The company was forced to conduct a new marketing campaign that revised their previous statements and issued an apology to consumers. The other two safety warnings were on the subject of a questionable ingredient in Yaz, a synthetic version of the hormone that affects fertility in women. The FDA claimed that Bayer was aware of the risks posed by the substance (drospirenone) but did not make that information clear to prospective buyers. Yaz was the most popular birth control pill in the US in the middle of the last decade, but has fallen out of favor now.
